Good quality, excellent if you are willing to put the work in.
When you work out how much you are paying per chisel these are not expensive at all. I would say they are reasonably priced, in the same way as a reasonably priced car on a certain motoring show. I'm not a professional, I'm s fussy DIY'er. so I did need to give the edges some TLC. They are not bad when you get them. I dare say there are those that would use them out of the box. But you can see that they are machine finished with quite accurate edge geometry. How do you sharpen a chisel? there are as many right answers to this as there are experts willing to voice an opinion. And by virtue of that fact they were sharpened exactly correctly. They were just at the point where each crafts-person can make them their own. My way, is by hand on whetstones. Really didn't need much work on the 1000 grit, 6000 took a bit longer, Gave them a micro-bevel and then finished nicely on my strop. A quick with a quick polish on the flat side with the 6000 finished it. Probably 15-20 minutes each to remove those machining marks and to get them to where I want them. If you sharpen yours to a convex curved bevel you are in for a lot of work and maybe some time on the bench grinder. Mine will hopefully never see a bench grinder. They cut the wood with ease, allowing you great control with gentler taps with the mallet. I didn't need the set. I just needed 2 or three of them to replace some of my older ones that have been getting shorter over the years without me really noticing. Now I have them they are there on the tool wall, out of the box and I get that feeling that everything is just right when I look at them. Definitely worth getting the set, at my age they are probably the last ones I'll buy.

Great Chisels! Awesome Price!
I was working on making some mortise and tenon jointery for a table I've been constructing. I have some old chisels that I pieced togother over time but they just weren't doing the job even after some sharpening. I needed a great chisel set and fast to finish my project so I did a little research and found the Irwin Marples Chisel set. Irwin has always been good to me so I didnt mind spending the money on one of there more top notch sets. My golly was I right! This chisel set even right out of the box were sharp, clean and an ease to use! I don't know how I was surviving without these in my life for so long lol. Been using them quite a bit latley and they seem to keep there edge pretty well even after beating on them with all my porjects I have. Looking forward to giving these a good sharpening to see what they can really do in the future. If your're looking for a great pair of chisels that will last and get the job done don't look any further. These chisels were right for me and I can guarentee they'll be right for you to!

Very sharp service
My father in law being a master carpenter had a set of Marples chisels a reason why decided on getting this box set. They are very good value at the price and also turned up a day earlier than expected, something other suppliers could take into consideration, plus no delivery charge to the Isle of Wight. They could have been wrapped slightly stronger but didn't incur any damage to the box. I showed them to my father in law, he thought they were pretty good, baring in mind that his chisels had rather nice hard wood handles. They were quite well factory sharpened, but by the time we get them on a Chinese wet stone they will really be sharp. Good strong quality steel blades. I am very pleased with them all, which included two extra pieces in the set.

Good steel, nice handle, rubbish striking plate
5 Years in the trade (on site too), overall great chisels that could last many more years (ive only sharpness them 5 times and there's plenty amount of steel left).I've moved on to Hultafors overall now but the 2" and the 10mm Marple chisels still survives the primary bag.If you can fine a way to fix the striking plate, these would be the "one and done" chisels, 5 stars, perfect for your FULL working career.

Excellent value and quality.
Would be excellent value for money for the six standard chisels in the box but to get a 38 and 50mm chisels as well is great. These chisels were bought to replace a set I've had for 40 yrs when I started my apprenticeship, I only bought them now because they had the 38 and 50mm included which was what I only needed really, and are great quality and will certainly see me to retirement. So what if the extra two chisels just placed in the box? They still fit in! Don't think they'll be in a box too long though. Probably transfer them to a chisel roll. Bit bulky in a box to carry around.

Very good but need honing.
Good chisels at a very good price, the case is not designed to hold all eight chisels but can be modified easily or just leave two out. They arrived ground to a point but need honing for use. The handles are comfortable to hold and the striking cap is just a metal cap and not part of the chisel blade so can fall off with heavy use as happened to me. Don’t expect that would happen with normal use. Recommend for all skill levels but don’t expect good results without sharpening them.

Great set of chisels!
A fantastic set of chisels. These were my first set of chisels which I’ve had for 3 years now and they have been wonderful. They have good grip, you can use them for long periods and they won’t hurt your hands, and they give a nice clean finish. Only downside is that the metal strike cap starts to come looser after time and they can twist when you hit them, but this has never been an issue for me. EDIT - I'VE NOW HAD THEM FOR 8 YEARS :)
